    Mapping the spatial variation of soil moisture at the large scale using GPR for pavement applications

    The characterization of shallow soil moisture spatial variability at the large scale is a crucial issue in many research studies and fields of application ranging from agriculture and geology to civil and environmental engineering. In this framework, this work contributes to the research in the area of pavement engineering for preventing damages and planning effective management. High spatial variations of subsurface water content can lead to unexpected damage of the load-bearing layers; accordingly, both safety and operability of roads become lower, thereby affecting an increase in expected accidents. A pulsed ground-penetrating radar system with ground-coupled antennas, i.e., 600-MHz and 1600-MHz center frequencies of investigation, was used to collect data in a 16 m × 16 m study site in the Po Valley area in northern Italy. Two ground-penetrating radar techniques were employed to non-destructively retrieve the subsurface moisture spatial profile. The first technique is based on the evalu¬ation of the dielectric permittivity from the attenuation of signal amplitudes. Therefore, dielectrics were converted into moisture values using soil-specific coefficients from Topp’s relationship. Ground-penetrating-radar-derived values of soil moisture were then compared with measurements from eight capacitance probes. The second technique is based on the Rayleigh scattering of the signal from the Fresnel theory, wherein the shifts of the peaks of frequency spectra are assumed comprehensive indi¬cators for characterizing the spatial variability of moisture.     Higgs Boson Production in Association with a Photon in Vector Boson Fusion at the LHC

    Higgs boson production in association with two forward jets and a central photon at the CERN Large Hadron Collider is analyzed, for the Higgs boson decaying into a b bbar pair in the m_H <= 140 GeV mass region. We study both irreducible and main reducible backgrounds at parton level. Compared to the Higgs production via vector-boson fusion, the request of a further photon at moderate rapidities dramatically enhances the signal/background ratio. Inclusive cross sections for p_T^\gamma >= 20 GeV can reach a few tens of fb's. After a suitable choice of kinematical cuts, the cross-section ratio for signal and irreducible-background can be enhanced up to >= ~1/10, with a signal cross section of the order of a few fb's, for m_H ~ 120 GeV. The request of a central photon radiation also enhances the relative signal sensitivity to the WWH coupling with respect to the ZZH coupling. Hence, a determination of the cross section for the associated production of a Higgs boson decaying into a b bbar pair plus a central photon in vector-boson fusion could help in constraining the b bbar H coupling, and the WWH coupling as well.     A non-invasive approach to monitor variability of soil water content with electromagnetic methods

    An accurate and high-resolution description of the spatial variability of soil water content at the field scale and the distribution of water in the unsaturated zone requires a large number of measurements. Financial and time constraints limit the numbers of measurement locations; thus the standard approach for monitoring could lead to a large degree of uncertainty in spatial predictions. We test in a parcel of bare soil an alternative approach based on ground-based geophysical techniques, by comparing the monitoring of the soil water content obtained from the Electrical Resisitivity Imaging and the Ground Penetrating Radar with the variability maps estimated from the interpolation of soil water contents measured in different locations with capacitance probes. The agreement is good and the integration of the techniques is promising

    Effect of chestnut and quebracho tannins on fatty acid profile in rumen liquid- and solid-associated bacteria: an in vitro study

    Tannins are phenolic compounds that interfere with biohydrogenation (BH) of polyunsaturated fatty acids (FAs). The aim of the present in vitro study was to investigate the effects of two different sources of tannins on FA profiles of rumen bacteria, with particular reference to rumenic and vaccenic acid. A control diet (C; composed of 300 g/kg of wheat straw, 132 g/kg of soyabean meal, 96 g/kg of barley meal, 152 g/kg of maize meal, 300 g/kg of maize gluten and 20 g/kg of mineral vitamin premix, all expressed on dry matter (DM)) and four diets, obtained by adding to C two different types of tannins from chestnut (TC) and from quebracho (TQ) at two concentration levels (49 and 82 g/kg DM), were compared. The content of the main unsaturated FAs (C18:1 cis9, C18:1 trans11, C18:2 cis9, cis12 and C18:3 cis9, cis12, cis15) from solid-associated bacteria (SAB) and liquid-associated bacteria (LAB) was affected by the presence of tannins in the diets. In particular, C18:1 trans11 content was significantly increased, especially with TC1, whereas the decreasing of C18:1 cis9 was unaffected, regardless of the presence or the kind of tannins added to feeds. SAB contained higher amounts of intermediates of polyunsaturated FA BH (as C18:1 trans11 and C18:2 cis9, trans11) than LAB that were characterized by a higher amount of C18:0. In the concentration range adopted in this study, the effect of TC and TQ on changes of bacterial FA profile was comparable. Tannins seem to be a good means to modulate the FA profile of rumen bacteria, favouring the accumulation of C18:1 trans11 during in vitro rumen fermentation

    Effect of three species of herbage (Medicago sativa, Lolium multiflorum, Avena sativa) on in vitro ruminal production of conjugated linoleic and vaccenic acids

    Little information is available about the effect of different forage species on the rumen biohydrogenation process. The aim of the present work is to compare the in vitro production of CLA and C18:1 isomers after incubation of three different herbage species in rumen liquor from sheep. Pasture herbage samples of lucerne (Medicago sativa; MS), ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum; LM) and oats (Avena sativa; AS) were submitted to in vitro fermentation with sheep rumen inoculum. Samples were collected at 2, 4, 6 and 8 hours of fermentation. The fatty acid profile of MS was characterised by 11.62 (g/100 g of lipid extract) of linoleic acid (LA) and 27.08 (g/100 g of lipid extract) of α-linolenic acid (LNA), whereas LA in the other two herbages was 6.60 (g/100 g of lipid extract) and 6.95 (g/100 g of lipid extract) in AS and LM, respectively; LNA was 52.20 (g/100 g of lipid extract) and 54.49 (g/100 g of lipid extract) in AS and LM, respectively. The crude fat content of botanical species was respectively 11.90 (g/100g DM) for AS, and 15.77 (g/100g DM) for LM and 26.17 (g/100g DM) for MS. Rumenic acid (RA, cis-9, trans-11 CLA) was the predominant CLA isomer and the maximum yield was attained with AS after 6 hours of fermentation (0.81 g/100 g of lipid extract); RA concentration remained quite low with the other two herbages. The concentration of the other isomer (trans-10, cis-12 CLA) was always very low; the maximum yield (0.09 g/100 g of lipid extract) was reached after 6 hours with AS. The maximum yield of vaccenic acid (VA, trans-11 C18:1) was reached after 8 hours with MS (2.64 g/100 g of lipid extract). This herbage also produced the highest amount of trans-10 C18:1 at 6 and 8 hours (0.17 g/100 g of lipid extract). AS appeared to have induced the highest amounts of RA relative to the other two forages. The differences in conjugated dienes and C18:1 isomers content during fermentation could be due not only to different amounts of LA or LNA in the herbage, but also to different releasing times of FA from the plant substrate

    Tectonomagnetic and VLF electromagnetic signals in Central Italy

    Tectonomagnetic field observations from absolute magnetic field level measurements were undertaken in Central Italy in an area extending between latitude 41°N and 43°N and between longitude 13°E and 15°E. Moreover,natural electromagnetic signals from a system of two VLF search coil wide-band antennas were collected at the geomagnetic observatory of L Aquila (42º23'N, 13º19'E). The analysis of these data allowed the investigation of the electromagnetic properties of the study area at different time and spatial lengthscales. Tectonomagnetic field observations were obtained comparing data simultaneously recorded at three magnetometer stations using L'Aquila Observatory as a reference for differentiation. We report on the time evolution of magnetic and electromagnetic indicators related to local and regional seismic activity

    This review is dedicated to the memory of Prof. Domenico Mariotti, who significantly contributed to establishing the Italian research community in Agricultural Genetics and carried out the first experiments of Agrobacterium-mediated plant genetic transformation and regeneration in Italy during the 1980s. Following his scientific interests as guiding principles, this review summarizes the recent advances obtained in plant biotechnology and fundamental research aiming to: (i) Exploit in vitro plant cell and tissue cultures to induce genetic variability and to produce useful metabolites; (ii) gain new insights into the biochemical function of Agrobacterium rhizogenes rol genes and their application to metabolite production, fruit tree transformation, and reverse genetics; (iii) improve genetic transformation in legume species, most of them recalcitrant to regeneration; (iv) untangle the potential of KNOTTED1-like homeobox (KNOX) transcription factors in plant morphogenesis as key regulators of hormonal homeostasis; and (v) elucidate the molecular mechanisms of the transition from juvenility to the adult phase in Prunus tree species

    Efficacy test of a hydrolysable tannin extract against necrotic enteritis in challenged broiler chickens

    A hydrolysable tannin extracted from chestnut (SaviotaN®) was tested for efficacy in controlling the proliferation of Clostridium perfringens in the gut of broiler chickens challenged via oral gavage first with coccidia (Eimeria tenella, Eimeria acervulina, Eimeria maxima) at the age of 10 days, and then with Clostridium perfringens at the age of 15 days. We randomly allocated 150 broiler chickens within 5 poultry isolators (30 birds each). Dietary treatments consisted of a basal diet (C) composed of corn [575 g/kg on dry matter (DM)] and soybean meal (100 g/kg DM), barley bran (220 g/kg DM), corn gluten feed (30 g/kg DM), soybean oil (25 g/kg DM), vitamin mineral premix (49.5 g/kg DM), and four other diets obtained by adding chestnut tannin extract (1.5, 3, 5, and 12 g/kg during week 1, 10.0 g/kg during week 2, and 8.0 g/kg during the last two weeks, respectively) to C. At the age of 20 days, 15 birds/group were euthanised and individually examined for the level of gut infection by count- ing Clostridium perfringens and macroscopic gut lesions. Results demonstrated that chestnut tan- nin gave significant results even at low concen- tration levels in the feed (1.5 to 3.0 g/kg), but was actually efficient in controlling necrotic enteritis at levels ≥5.0 g/kg. The treatment (12.0 g/kg dur- ing the first week and 8.0 g/kg during the last two weeks of age) resulted very efficient in control- ling the proliferation of Clostridium perfringens and in reducing the severity of gut damage com- pared to the untreated infected group

    Photo-ignition process of multiwall carbon nanotubes and ferrocene by continuous wave Xe lamp illumination

    none8noThis work aims to investigate and characterize the photo-ignition phenomenon of MWCNT/ferrocene mixtures by using a continuous wave (CW) xenon (Xe) light source, in order to find the power ignition threshold by employing a different type of light source as was used in previous research (i.e., pulsed Xe lamp). The experimental photo-ignition tests were carried out by varying the weight ratio of the used mixtures, luminous power, and wavelength range of the incident Xe light by using selective optical filters. For a better explanation of the photo-induced ignition process, the absorption spectra of MWCNT/ferrocene mixtures and ferrocene only were obtained. The experimental results show that the luminous power (related to the entire spectrum of the Xe lamp) needed to trigger the ignition of MWCNT/ferrocene mixtures decreases with increasing metal nanoparticles content according to previously published results when using a different type of light source (i.e., pulsed vs CW Xe light source). Furthermore, less light power is required to trigger photo-ignition when moving towards the ultraviolet (UV) region. This is in agreement with the measured absorption spectra, which present higher absorption values in the UV–vis region for both MWCNT/ferrocene mixtures and ferrocene only diluted in toluene. Finally, a chemo-physical interpretation of the ignition phenomenon is proposed whereby ferrocene photo-excitation, due to photon absorption, produces ferrocene itself in its excited form and is thus capable of promoting electron transfer to MWCNTs.
